McDonald's has only ever sold a plant-based burger in the US for a short time between 2021 and 2022 in its more than 80 years of operation.
The national fast-food chain has now disclosed why its American locations did not succeed with the product, years after removing it off menus across the nation.
The burger, which goes by the official name "McPlant," was created in association with Beyond Meat and is composed of potatoes, grains, and peas instead of meat.
McDonald's found positive results in the European markets when it first introduced the burger as a test product
in Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria, and the United Kingdom.
Early on, the McDonald's McPlant test in the United States appeared to have promise.
Due to the burger's higher-than-expected sales, McDonald's decided to open the McPlant at roughly 600 more American outlets in February 2022.
In July 2022, McDonald's removed the plant-based burger from its U.S. outlets, less than a year after it debuted.
